Hand or foot prints are quite common and look good if executed well
Date of birth, name, something that makes you think of your daughter?
Now: 8mm lobes. 4mm septum. double conch.
helix. tongue. rook. 5mm conch punch. outer conch.
central labret. 8 tattoos.
Retired: snakebites. nostril x 2. 2nd & 3rd lobes. helix.
Next: tattoos.

I'm in the same place Nic. My daughter's 16 months now and I still don't know what tat to get. I thought when she is old enough to write, I wanted her to write her name, my name and our birthdays and I would tattoo them like that. I think it's a cute idea. I like the handprint/frootprint idea but it's SO overdone, I want something a bit more original - at least for where I live. You can just have a portrait of her the way she looks now and put the date it was done under or incorporated in the design somehow?

I didn't have a tattoo specific to my two children, but I did get one a little later to represent my family (the third name is their father). Its very simple, but I like the symbolism of the triquetra:

these are all cool ideas, thanks for shareing!!! im just so effing indecisive! with the hand prints, i kinda wish id had done some when she was born, i feel ive missed the boat now shes nearly 10 month. i do like the motherhood knot, ive been googling images of those, not sure of placement tho, humm. the only good this is, since ive come back from mat leave, ive been sent to a different store, and its soo bloody cold, keeping the tatt covered wont be an issue lol ive never worn so many clothes at once for work. maybe the wrist or above the ankle?

@nicole My daughter is 16 months to be 17 soon and I've decided to wait till she's old enough to write, as I want to have the first thing she will ever write down in a tat.
I think it's an awesome idea but that's me. Above the ankle is one of my fav places for a tattoo by the way. I'd also like it on the back of the neck but that's totally up to you. Good luck! Post photo once you have it done!

It's probably corny and overdone, but what about her sign of the Zodiac? That might be a good starting point, but as I said, probably stupid and overdone.
Alternatively, first words (similar to Marianne's idea). Also, if you're planning to have more than one child, then I assume you'll get multiple tattoos. One idea is to have a symbol of motherhood (there is a celtic one, three swirls in a triangle shape, or some Buddhist ones, Hindu, etc.) and then add names around or beneath the main symbol of motherhood.
Dunno if those are good ideas. Sorry if I've repeated anyone else. Quite tired.
