Smiley piercings are officially known as upper lip frenulum piercings and are pierced through the thin tissue connecting the gum and the centre of the upper lip. This piece of tissue is very thin and smiley piercings are fairly painless. They are called "smiley" piercings because if you wear a BCR in this piercing it is visible when you smile.
Smiley piercings are usually pierced using a small BCR, sized so that the ball sits just below the gum line, in between the front teeth. There is a risk of tooth and gum erosion with smiley piercings but it is usually minor. If you notice any change to your teeth or gums, consult your piercer immediately. Smiley piercings often reject after a year or so without causing any damage. Rinse with suitable mouthwash twice daily and after eating. Avoid alcohol and smoking until piercing is healed.
Smiley Piercing Healing Time: 4 to 12 weeks
