The clitoral hood is the tissue that covers the clitoris and it is usually pierced vertically. Horizontal clitoral hood piercings are also done but are less usual. This piercing is often incorrectly referred to as a "clit piercing" but does not pass through the clitoris itself. Most women can get this piercing but sometimes the hood is too small, so this should always be checked before the piercing is performed.
Curved barbells and ball closure rings can be worn in clitoral hood piercings and choice of jewellery will depend on your individual anatomy. This area receives a plentiful blood supply and usually heals well. The main difficulty with clit hood piercings is keeping the piercing clean and dry. Wear breathable, non-restrictive underwear and air the piercing when possible. If this piercing becomes infected it could lead to cystitis so any signs of infection should be treated immediately. We recommend abstaining from sexual activity until the piercing is completely healed. Clean with saline solution as needed and avoid swimming or submersion in water until healed - we recommend taking showers rather than baths.
