Back To School 5: Ear Piercing RetainersAugust 26th, 2010
Ear piercings are the most popular type of body piercing and hiding them can be a big deal if you attend a school that does not allow ‘non-standard’ ear piercings. Many schools allow ear cartilage piercings but some do not allow anything other than ear lobe piercings and most frown on stretched ears. Thankfully there is a great choice of ear piercing retainers available. A well-chosen ear piercing retainer will hide your ear piercing and make it very hard to spot.
Ear Cartilage Piercing Retainers
Whether you have a tragus piercing, helix piercing or conch piercing, the best type of ear piercing retainer is a BioFlex labret stud. These flexible labret studs are very comfortable to wear and they are all but invisible against your skin. The trick to successfully hiding your ear piercings is getting ear piercing retainers of the right size. If the retainer is too long it will stick out and look really obvious. Luckily, BioFlex can be trimmed with scissors, so you can simply cut these ear piercing retainers down to size.
There are two basic choices here – an ear piercing retainer with an O-ring or one with a push-fit head. The push-fit head is flatter and blends in better with your ear but some people do prefer the O-ring version. The ear piercing retainer in the centre is a good bet for the majority of ear cartilage piercings. It also comes with a brown, black or pale flesh tone head (shown on the right). Personally I think the clear version works best but again, individual preferences vary.
Stretched Ear Piercing Retainers
It is surprisingly easy to hide stretched ear piercings with a silicone stretched ear piercing retainer. This type of retainer is essentially a flesh-coloured silicone flesh plug designed to blend in with your skin and hide the stretching. They work best on piercings under 12mm and give a really discrete look. Unfortunately these stretched ear piercing retainers only come in one colour at the moment, but they work really well on fair to olive skin tones.
